💥💥 The brother ship of "KERYNEIA" sailed in MARINA LEMESOU👌
After a 75-hour voyage and wind-powered, it arrived at Limassol Marina yesterday morning, "Makan Michael 2", a faithful copy of an ancient ship found in Israel and considered a "brother" ship of the historic ship "Kyrenia".
This is the maiden journey of "Makan Michael 2", which was launched at the Haifa harbor, Haifa University and the Israeli Authority of Antiquities in March 2017.
The "Makan Michael 2" "tied" next to the ship Kyrenia - Eleftheria, which is hosted at the Limassol marina, while a joint boat of the two ships is planned to be held in the next few days.
Excited by the presence of "Kyrenia's boat brother," former Mayor of Kyrenia, Glafkos Kariolou, welcomed the six-man crew of our ship.
Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency, Mr. Kariolos said that most of the findings of the original boat were Cypriot, and the impression was that the material used for the ballast of the vessel (for stability purposes) originated from the Kourris River.
A decisive factor in the construction of the copy was the information given to the University of Haifa by the Governors and the crew of "Kyrenia-Freedom", the Cultural Foundation KERYNIA-CHRYSOKAVA and the University of Cyprus.
An exhilarating experience featured Israeli voyage to Cyprus by "Makan Michael 2" captain, Yochai Palzur, saying "it is incredible feeling now that we have completed this journey."
It is reported that the shipwreck was discovered in the autumn of 1985 by Ami Eshel, a member of the "Ma`agan Michael" parish, while diving in shallow waters, just 75 meters away from the beach.
The wreck, which took its name from the cove where it was discovered, was excavated, and what remained of its wooden skier was placed in maintenance tanks at Haifa University for seven years of maintenance. In March 1999 the conserved members of the vessel were reassembled and placed in a special wing built at the Hecht Museum, within the University's premises.
The discovery of the ship provided the researchers with information on the evolution of ancient shipbuilding, while the ship has many similarities to other ancient vessels, such as the Kyrenia ship, but also significant differences such as size, methods of construction, etc.
In addition to revealing many questions about the evolution of ship anchors, the anchor found in "Ma`agan Michael" is the first wooden anchor of that time ever to be discovered almost intact.
The crew of "Kyrenia - Freedom" prepares to reward the trip early April 2019.
